You will need the following information to configure your mail client(s) to use LiteracyTent email. Where exactly you enter this information depends on your mail client; if you need assistance, please see the Contact page.
Values in italics should be replaced with your own information; for example, replace password with your own password.
| Setting | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming mail server | mail.silicongoblin.com | Copy this exactly. |
| Account type | IMAP | LiteracyTent mail accounts are IMAP, not POP. IMAP mail stays on the server, which allows you to check it from anywhere, and has many other advantages over POP. |
| IMAP prefix | For most mail clients, you can leave this blank. If this doesn't work, set it to {INBOX} (with the curly braces). | |
| Authentication | Password | This should be the default for most mail clients; a password is required to check mail. |
| Username | you@yourdomain.org | Your username is your full email address, including the "@" sign and the full domain. |
| Password | your password | Some mail clients allow you to store your password in the setup information, so you are not prompted for it when you sign on/check mail. Especially on shared computers, we do NOT recommend this - anybody will be able to read your mail, and send mail as if it were from you. |
| SMTP/outgoing mail server | smtp.silicongoblin.com | This is optional; you may use your ISP's mail server if you wish. To use LiteracyTent's, your mail client will need to be able to authenticate with your username and password. If your mail client can't do this (recent versions of Eudora cannot, for example), then you will have to use your ISP's SMTP server. |
| SMTP port / SSL | 25 / yes | Use port 25 for SMTP, and use SSL for best results (to encrypt your username and password). Note that your mail client may say the SSL certificate is unrecognized and give you a warning about it; this is because we signed our own certificate. You can ignore this message, or you can choose not to use SSL and just use non-encrypted authentication. |
| SMTP authentication | your username and password | Authentication is required for using the LiteracyTent SMTP servers, and the authentication is the same as for checking mail: your full username (with the "@" sign and your full domain) and your password. Without this, sending mail will not be allowed. This is an anti-spamming measure that is required. |
